ARTIST STATEMENT
The focal point of my painting is the fruit, I wanted to create emphasis and utilized different objects, props and colours to bring the fruit out as a centre point to the viewer. Creating this artwork I used studied the form and proportions of my subjects to try and accurately and realistically depict them in my painting, I mainly used a various array of blues and greens (vase, platter table) and oranges with reds (pear, banana, background) along with some yellow in the bananas. I used complementary colour like blue and orange for highlights and shadows rather than pure black and whites
Once I transferred my painting over, I painting the under layer with a burnt sienna tone. The underpainting allows me to create a harmonious colour scheme whilst allowing me to build in contrast, tones and values better than a pure white would allow me too. Creating this art piece was definitely a challenge for me. Painting, specifically acrylic painting has always been a challenge. During my process of creating this piece, I struggled a lot with blending, mixing colours, and using the right techniques. During the process, I learnt to embraces the messiness and rather draw inspiration from impressionist art and try to capture the essence of the objects rather than exactly what I saw.
Creating it had its ups and downs and even if it took me a while to become satisfied I feel that the overall process taught me an important lesson. Art doesn't have to be perfect to be good, as long as you're doing something that expresses yourself. After I stopped putting pressure on myself to make it perfect and instead let myself go, I found painting very relaxing and enjoyable. I feel that this experience has made me want to further study painting and its techniques and use it more as a medium in the future. I feel that for a first attempt my painting wasn't bad, in the future I want to focus on further developing my techniques and being able to display form more accurately.
