what is art to me

Art is a broad term that can refer to many things, whether its dancing, music, painting or drawing, anything and everything can be seen as a form of art. Art is a way to express yourself, it can communicate emotions and ideas much more than words ever could. Art has no limitations, its a place where you can truly be your self, without worry or fear of judgement. Art has been a big part of my life for as long as I can remember, as someone who often struggled with expressing myself, I use art as an outlet for my thoughts and emotions, it helped me escape from the worries about my everyday life. When you create art it has its own meaning unique to you, I find it fascinating how a single art piece can have so many meanings and interpretations depending on the person. That's the beauty of art, it allows all of us to connect with each other no matter how different we may be. More than anything, Art to me is a feeling, a feeling that we can share with others.

WHAT IS YOUR ART STYLE?

what media do you like to use?

Throughout the years I’ve often felt like I needed to have a specific art style. I spent most of my time struggling to maintain a specific style of art or coming up with something unique to myself. No matter what I tried I felt like I was unhappy with my art, or whatever I did wasn’t good enough. I spent more time worrying that I wasn’t doing art the proper way instead of spending time furthering my abilities. But as time passed and started to develop as a person, I realized that instead of being constricted by a specific style or medium I like to experiment with everything. Although my art may sometimes seem inconsistent, I feel happiest whomever I just go with the flow and go with a style that best fits whatever I intend to make. I usually have a semi-realistic style, incorporating more fantasy and whimsical elements into traditional realistic art. I love surreal and impressionist art; I often find ways to reference these styles in my personal art. I’m still growing as an artist, and in the process of that, I hope to be able to a style that accurate reprints me.

As an artist, I love experimenting with different art media. Although some mediums may be more challenging to use than others, I still enjoy trying new things. My usual “go-to” mediums are drawing/coloured pencils or digital art. As I’m more experienced in these and I feel its easier for me to work with things I already know. However, whenever I create art, I tend to gravitate towards using mixed media. I challenge myself by incorporating different mediums like painting, collages, pastels, into my usual use of drawing or digital art. I feel like this helps make my artwork more interesting to look at, all whilst allowing me to push myself creatively.

WHAT COMMON OR REOCCURRING THEMES APPEAR IN YOUR ART

Throughout my art I feel like I often base many art pieces around space and the galaxy, or nature and flowers. Even if these are two contrasting themes, I incorporate them both into my art. I don’t have any specific why, but its something that I’ve been doing for ages. To me they’re both very beautiful things, even if they’re quite different from each other. Whatever I use usually depends on my mood, they act as a symbolism to further communicate my message. Another theme I use in my art are reference to music or song I love. I love all forms of art, music being one of them. I find inspiration for many of my drawings by simply listening to music I like. It helps me visualize the feelings a thought that I can connect to in each song.

How has creating artwork changed your personal identity

Art has been a big part of my identity for as long as I can remember. Throughout all the highs and lows I’d turn to art to express myself and my emotions. In recent years I had found myself in an art block, no matter what I did I wasn’t happy with my art and felt like I had lost my creativity, I had fallen out of love with art. This year taking art as a course has been an amazing experience, I regained my love for art and finally got out of my art block. Art gives you a place where you just express yourself, without fear of judgement from others. Each art piece you do communicates emotions and ideas more than words could. Each detail representing another piece of a story. Art has thought me to see the beauty in things, even if you make mistakes, even if it isn’t perfect, that’s the beauty of it. Art isn’t mint to just be looked at, its mint to make you feel something. Creating art was like finding the piece of myself that I was missing.

what is your favourite type of art/artist

I don’t have a favourite artist in particular but I appreciate and love all types of art. Every style, medium and art movement are unique in their own ways, each requiring specific techniques and abilities in order to create beautiful masterpieces. Overall my favourite types of art are impressionism, surrealism and renaissance period art. I love impressionism because it doesn’t only focus on how realistic or accurate the depiction is, it instead seeks to capture the essence and evoke a feeling or an experience. Every impressionist piece is beautiful and harmonious, seeming like a whimsical scene from a dream. Although renaissance art is almost the opposite of impressionism, I love it because of the detail every single artwork has incredible detail, that brings the art piece to life. I admire how realistic they appear, and how every artwork seems to hold a deeper meaning or story. My final favourite type of art is surrealism. Surrealism has always been one of my favourite art styles experiment with, simply because you have so much creative freedom to work with, it's interesting to look at, every time you see a surrealist piece you can find something new each time, almost looking like a strange dream you’ve had but can't remember. Overall, I love harmonious and calming art pieces, filled with fantasy elements. Along with desaturated, pastel and “soft” colour schemes.
